Quick Lessons on Instagram Algorithm changes

Well this has been a startling week! The changes to Instagram and the algorithm sent me for six and had me confused every which way! I thought I had it down but in face I was horrifically wrong!
So lets start with some lessons learned this week. Peggy Dean from the Pigeon Letters, wrote a great post on what to expect with the new Instagram changes. I skimmed over it. I really shouldn’t have. So lets summarise it it a couple of bullet points (because we love bullets and bullet journalling right!)

OK! Onto the the good stuff! The top 10 purple posts from this week!I’m surprised you made it so far! haha!
T

  • When you post something, it will only be exposed to about 10% of your followers, if its popular – then it will spread.

  • Pods will now essentially lead to shadow banning. Instagram isn’t stupid.

  • Engagement on your posts is based on the engagement you make. Essentially try to respond to your responses within an hour or your engagement decreased incrementally.

  • Those one lined “Great work”, “Super pic” etc. This is not considered engagement anymore. It has to be 4 words or more. So start being kinder to people! Actually take time to make a meaningful post.

  • Learn more about doing things in Instagram stories – they will help you keep at the top of an ever growing pile.

  • Hastags; if you are using your full 30 hashtags in your physical post – this will be seen as spam. And placing them in the comments will not let them come up in searches.

  • You can follow hashtags which means you might see things that you haven’t previously seen or people you haven’t followed in the past.

Now – My own experience on this this week has been bizarre to say the least….and I am going to share the actual stats with you from right this second on my accounts. @theartoflifenz and @theartofbujo

Lets start with The Art of Life Instagram page – I have worked blood sweat and tears to grow my little page up. Meaningful content and pretty things. I’ve tried themes and layouts and all things pretty. I’ve tried hashtags and competitions and challenges. I’ve tried it all.

So at the moment, I have 4564 followers (HAPPY DANCE! Thats great!) but when we get to the crux of it – Ive had 6339 Impressions. As a business that is not fabulous for a following that size.  A maximum of 76 people (out of a potential 4564 thats 1.6%) liked my posts. The top one reached 389 people, and had 502 unique impressions. What the Actual F***!
So on the 4th of January I started a separate page – more for me for inspiration to find some great bullet journalling spreads etc. Nothing special. I thought (in my mind) Ill only follow specific Bullet Journal related feeds – keep it low key – use it for inspiration etc.
Lets looks at the stats. (keeping in mind that this account is a total of 12 days old)
So with 273 followers – on one post I got 2444 likes – That is a 895% increase. A total weekly impression of 48 673? Thats unheard of!
So what does this mean and what did I do differently?
Well it essentially means nothing – the page isn’t monitised, it has a link to my website but it isnt set up in the same way so its difficult to track the traffic.
What I did differently is I followed some of the HashTags I thought might be interesting. That’s it. And when I post, I’ve been keeping the hashtags in the body of the content. That’s it. No magic. No witchery. F*ing bizarre Instagram land.

I love The Art of BuJo repost account because there are so many different types of spreads. You can see how unique people are and how different each person displays a topic. I love that. It shows how individual we are and should be.

The Art of BuJo is the only account I regularly seek out for inspiration. I love that its divided into themes, it is brilliant to scroll through if you are stuck for a theme for the month. I also love the diverse range of styles they feature!
