100+ Mandala Inspired bullet journal themes to release your inner awesome!
(Updated in January 2019 – Now includes 100 amazing Mandala Inspired Bullet Journal Spreads!) Well its funny because Mandala literally means circle – and its not quite or exactly a circle is it? When we look at mandala bullet journal spreads they really just look like great doodles right!?
What is a Mandala and what does it mean?
The Mandala was originally from the Tibetan Buddhists, and while its a great looking geometric shape, I first learnt about its origins when living in Thailand. So its really deep! A mandala is a symbolic picture of the universe. It can be a painting on a wall or scroll, created in coloured sands on a table, or a visualisation in the mind of a very skilled adept.
Why are mandalas a lovely idea for your bullet journal
Sometimes mandalas are associated with a symbolic palace. In the centre of the mandala lies the palace, which has four gates oriented to the four quarters of the world and is located within several layers of circles that form a protective barrier around it.
Each layer symbolizes a quality (e.g. purity, devotion) that one must obtain before accessing the palace. Depending on the tradition it belongs to, inside the palace the mandala has symbols associated with different deities or cultural symbols such as a thunderbolt (symbol of the male), a bell (symbol of the female), a wheel (symbol of the Buddhist Eightfold Path) or a diamond (symbol of a clear mind) among others.
I thought it would be fun to include this post on “How to draw a mandala” for those who wanted to try it! And I loved this post particularly because it covered all the different types of Mandalas you might see or want to potentially use when drawing a mandala in your bullet journal.
Drawing Mandalas in your bullet journal
These have become a common feature in bullet journals over the years, whats great about them is that they are a great way to focus on some mindfulness while you draw.
There are many ways to add this ancient practice to your journal as you can see below. I personally adore using stamps in my journal and have collected a number of mandala stamps to create easy spreads.
You can shop all my favorite stamps and mandala stencils at the bottom of this post 🙂
